When I was a little girl I used to sit on the living room floor, with the sun shining in through the windows, and listen to my mom’s records (mostly Neil Diamond and John Denver).
I’d close my eyes and pretend the love songs were written for me. I’d even put my name in the song when I was singing them – Liesel doesn’t always flow so well, not such great rhyming options 😉 but I made it work.
Long into my adult life, I dreamed of having someone write a love song just for me.
Fast forward 25 years…
I’m sitting in my living room on a warm summer day with (my now husband) Craig, 4 days after our first kiss.
He’s playing me a beautiful song he wrote called “Magic Road” and I’m thinking to myself ‘this man has such a beautiful heart – I am so frickin’ grateful to be here with him!’
When the song finished, he started playing around with another tune and got out the notebook where he writes down his lyrics. He was mumbling the lines as he was playing, and I kept trying to hear the words.
I asked if I could read what he wrote, and he said “I don’t want to freak you out.”
I peeked at the page and read the first two lines…
I can hear your heart calling, so if I start falling in love with you
I started crying and said “You’re not freaking me out, I feel the same way!”
My first love song. The beginning of our love story.
A part of me never dreamed it could really happen like that for me… especially with my track record with men!
And yet a deeper part of me held to that vision and called it into my life.
That was 13 years ago, and our love – and music – have continued to blossom. Craig is still writing beautiful, inspiring songs and sometimes now I even write them with him.
He’s just finished a new song that completely opens my heart whenever I hear it. It’s a powerful and simple mantra called The Way of Love.
